Liguus List

Feature Guide.......Contact Us......Other Family Lists
Note: The genus Liguus has been called the most beautiful of all landsnails. Because of the "fragmented" nature of its natural habitat - isolated hummocks in wetlands mostly in Florida and Cuba - the most successful species, L. fasciatus Muller, often forms colonies of "true-breeding" forms, sometimes quite different even on neighbouring hummocks! Many of these forms have been given names over the years, and a large Liguus collection will have over 200 of them. It is now illegal to collect them in Florida, so the ones sold from there, are almost all "re-cycled", and practically no new specimens are being collected...although in Cuba the situation is rather different since government oversight and law enforcement of such matters is far more lax. |
